Mount Pleasant SealWhen it comes to Mount Pleasant South Carolina’s success as a city, the most attributing factor would be the area’s convenient location. Mount Pleasant, and the Charleston Region, has traditionally benefited from its centralized Eastern Seaboard location. The area has become a gateway to many travelers throughout the years, due to its position midway between other major cities across the United States. The Mount Pleasant and Charleston area is evenly located between Miami and Washington D.C., and only just a little bit farther to metropolises like New York City and Boston.

In the past two decades, Mount Pleasant’s economy has grown exponentially due to the key location. Mount Pleasant and the surrounding Charleston districts have provided transportation access to a staggering amount of this nation’s traveling population as well as its business industries, well over 60% of the total number of these travelers have passed through the Mount Pleasant area. Accessible highway systems, nearby international airport, and access to the second busiest container port along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts have made the city of Mount Pleasant open for all – by land, by air and by sea.

Mount Pleasant History

Mount Pleasant HistoryOnce home to the Sewee Indians, the lands of Mount Pleasant were first settled by the British in 1680. During those times, and from early maps, this region was called “North Point.” Over the next several years, a steady stream of other settlers found there way to “North Point,” and by 1696 over 50 new settlers had arrived. Each new family that did arrive to the area were awarded several hundred acres to begin their new lives and this group of people grew into the Christ Church parish.
Charleston and Mount Pleasant have always been separated by the Cooper River, so isolated was Mount Pleasant, the whole area was center around this one area of town called “Old Town.” In 1928 though, a bridge from the Charleston Peninsula to Mount Pleasant was built and a number of other bridges throughout the region followed. These bridges connected Mount Pleasant to the rest of its blossoming South Carolina region, helping it grow into the ideal township it is today.
